Why We Chose PCR Packaging (and Why It Matters)

At Biker and Baker, every decision we make is rooted in care - for our customers, our community, and our planet. When it came time to choose our packaging for our rebrand, we knew we wanted something that went beyond simply looking eco-friendly. We wanted packaging that truly makes a difference.

Looking Back: Our Old Packaging

When we first started Biker and Baker, we used kraft-style lined bags with three separate labels - two for the front and one for the back. They looked great (and we often got compliments on them), but behind the scenes, the carbon footprint weighed heavily on us.

Think about it - the energy to produce and ship the bags and the labels separately, the extra waste from the labels themselves, plus the time and energy it took to hand-label every bag. And the biggest kicker? None of it was even recyclable!

At the time, going this route made sense for us as a small company - mainly from a cost perspective. But as we continue to grow, we can't ignore the impact we have as a consumer packaged goods business - small or however big we get.

That’s why we chose PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic for our new bags that we directly print on. Traditional recyclable packaging was an option but we did some research and decided PCR allowed us to have a more controllable impact. It wasn’t the cheapest or easiest route, but it was the one that aligned with our values. And here’s why…

What is PCR Plastic?

PCR stands for Post-Consumer Recycled. Instead of creating new plastic from scratch, PCR uses plastic that’s already been recycled by consumers. Think of things like bottles, containers, and packaging that have already lived one life, been collected, and transformed into something new.

By using PCR, we’re giving plastic waste a second chance and are keeping it out of landfills and reducing the demand for virgin plastic production.

Why We Didn’t Just Go with “Recyclable”

At first, we thought recyclable packaging was the obvious answer. But here’s the thing, recyclable doesn’t always mean it actually gets recycled. The sad truth is, a lot of recyclable packaging still ends up in the trash because of contamination, lack of facilities, or low demand.

With PCR, the recycling has already been done. We’re closing the loop by using material that’s already been recycled - a much bigger impact than simply hoping packaging will be recycled later.

Yes, It Was a Big Decision

We’ll be honest, choosing PCR wasn’t the cheapest path. It required more investment and more planning. But to us, it’s worth it. Because every bag of Biker and Baker granola you buy isn’t just nourishing and fueling you - it’s also part of a larger movement to reduce waste and support a more sustainable food system.

Why It Matters for You

When you pick up a bag of Biker and Baker granola, you can feel good knowing your purchase is doing double duty. You’re fueling your day with clean, delicious ingredients your body will thank you for and you’re helping keep plastic out of landfills.

We believe small changes add up and by choosing PCR, we’re making a conscious step toward a greener future. And together, so are you.

From biking to baking, we’re committed to riding a little lighter on this planet. Thanks for joining us on the journey. 💚 Adam & Jennifer
